Why Is It So Taboo For Someone Telling How Much They Bought A Fish For.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are several sides to this:

  • It has potential to make others feel inferior
  • Look at how much money I have and how I carelessly spend it
  • Is it really your business?
  • If the OP wanted to disclose how much they paid for it, they would up front.
  • Respect for other members who might not have as much money
  • Being humble and not wanting to brag about how much you paid on a fish
Its someones personal life, which you have no right to go delving into. If they want to disclose the info, they will. Each person has their own reason for posting or not wanting to post how much they paid. Would be courteous to respect their decision and not question it.

I have no problem disclosing what I paid for equipment, live stock, or whatever. Its not like your salary, credit rating, or any deep secret.

Some of the price questions are just curiousity..what is wrong with that? Isn't this a community of hobbyist helping other hobbyist?

How would you feel if someone asked you for something you consider private? Theres all kinds of hobbyists out there.

Fish keeping is what i am interested in and is a hobby of mine. It is not a business for me and I am not in it for financial gain. I love the hobby and love what I keep. It consists of rare peacock bass, rays and rare piranhas and some common stuff. Heck, I even keep a $6.00 crown tail betta in a nano 2 gallon. But that fish is just as spoiled as my most expensive fishes I own in the 560 gallon. The betta tank has a 3 stage filtration, 10 watt heater, bright LED lighting and is fully planted. I try to give all my fishes a good life in my care as best as I can.
When ever I inquire about what something cost is strictly my own curiosity and my interest in that fish itself not because I am looking for info for bad intentions. I respect and admire fellow hobbyist who do everything they can for the health and well being of their pet fishes. I think those who are really uptight about sharing prices of their fish are usually fish brokers who buy and sell fishes on a regular basis and not really intend on raising them for life. Kind of like when a vendor gets in a lot of fry of a rare fish and they buy a lot and raise it up to sell them in the future for more money or when the market gets "hot". I am not saying there is anything wrong with that. To each their own and I am not judging and saying that person is bad or anything. I guess for them there is a profit to be made in this fish keeping business and openly discussing prices can harm their profit margin. How many times have you guys seen someone selling their fish for one price one day, then bump it up because the market on that fish got popular and then snowballed into insanely high prices hence what I mean when I say "rare fish prices". Just for example Siamese Wide-bar Datnoids. I am certainly not hating on anyone. It is just an observation in our hobby. There is no right or wrong answer. And in no way am I saying I am like a fish keeping saint. I am just a normal hobbyist and love fish keeping and that's why I am on MFK.

Edit: oh and how much did you pay for them? haha, just kidding, i have no reason to know yet

LOL, Yeah I am also a big fan or Piranha species. I have 8 inch Serrasalmus Manueli. 10 inch true diamond blue rhom, a pygo shoal that consists of one 8 inch piraya, four 9-10 inch caribes and one 8 inch common red belly. Last but not least one 6 inch Serrasalmus Altuvei. I am a serious fish nut!
Thank you all for replying, everyone who posted have all great valid points about my original topic and I really appreciate your expressing your opinions to me.
We are all in a big brotherhood and sisterhood in this addicting hobby of ours.

I regularly visit a car forum for the particular brand auto I own. There is a whole section on what people paid for their car.

They also have a section rating the dealerships and sales people within those dealerships. That's a great section because the rating discussions filter out the fake "I'm your best friend" sales tactic and focus on the results of the transaction: price paid, time spent to get to that price, hidden cost, any bait & switch tactics, and of course the after sale experience.

BTW - I voluntarily posted what I paid for my car, identified the dealership, salesman, and the overall experience.

This particular car forum is very helpful and has saved lots of forum members plenty of money. There would be similar savings for Monster Fish Keeper members if more people would share what they paid for a fish; especially for the younger members who are often taken advantage of.

some people don't wanna say it coz' some people might think they boast. idk, that's just me.

Who cares
I want to get XYZ fish, how much did you pay and where? Share so others can experience the hobby to it's fullest.

Maybe I want an XYZ and it's normally $40 but out of stock everywhere. If people are buying them for $200, I may change my project...

I just say it's personal; no harm in asking though.

Sales folks are always asking personal questions. If I start looking at a car seriously, the salesman will ask how much I'm currently paying for my lease or car payments; what is my loan rate, etc. None of his business, but I know he would love to know that information.

Same with insurance salesmen or any sales person who is trying to sell you something expensive; possibly involving monthly payments. I just don't provide that information.

That's a good way to look at it. Providing the price to others on this forum gives them a baseline for their purchase. We have a common passion for fish keeping and we should be looking out for one another.
