It could be several things that are causing green water. First give us a little more information to go off of. How long do you keep your aquarium lights on, what are you using for filtration, what are the tank dimensions, and what sort of fish do you have in the aquarium?
I had green water in one of my tanks. But it was a outdoor tank so nothing I could do about that in reducing the sun light. I black out my tank with news paper for a week and haven't had any problems anymore. I would invest in a uv then you won't have to deal green water anymore.
An ultraviolet sterilizer will clear up the green water. Another way is to add fast growing plants to the tank. Floating plants such as water hyacinth, water lettuce and duckweed will block some of the light coming in from the surface and will quickly use up the nutrients in the tank and thereby starve the algae.
