why is my endli getting back external gills?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have to admit that it is very tempting knowing this piece of info, to take my oxygen levels down a bit. I love the external gills an wished they retained them throughout life, but I also love my fish so I wouldn't attempt it. If someone has a pic of this with a more mature bichir they should post.

ok. lets make this simple. why the y have regrow the external gills is because of good amnt of oxygen in ur tank(which cohazrd has mentioned), hence these bichirs will not have to swim up to the surface to gulp air that often. with the external gills regrowed, bichirs will be able to stay in the bottom for a longer period of time due the ability of the external gills to absorb oxygen from the water itself.

hope this helps.:)

@bichirbichir: is this always so?... i mean, if you are able to increase the oxygen levels in the tank then bichirs will grow back their external gill frills?

it has to depend on cases. not only good oxygen level i would say, but very good water conditions. In my opinion, if your bichirs keep swimming up to the surface to gulp air too frequently shows tht your water condition is not too good for them.

regards.

The external gills creep me out, to the point where I would definitely consider trading or selling my endli no matter what size it was when it "grew them back"....
