Why is my jaguar scared of me?

Fish are funny. My little Midas would run and hide when I approached the tank when he was about an 1 1/2", so I decide to get 2 small 3/4" convicts for him to chase around and to add a bunch of plastic plants and decor.
It sort of worked he would come out all the time at feeding and consume almost all the food put in the tank and really started to respond to me.
The convicts decided they were a breeding pair and became extremely aggressive toward the Midas to the point where he would back down and hide. The whole tank became their territory! Wow that went wrong!
I pulled the Convicts out and took them back to the store. Ever since then my Midas has been awesome; it comes out all the time when it sees me and barely ever hides.
So the Convicts as dithers sort of worked but they can be mean little buggers!

pretty much he needs time. i feel like jags do this extra bad. i had one who never really moved until he was 5 in. and then he started taking over the tank. but just try to stay next to the tank until he finishes his food. if he won't eat his food while your there just wait for him to notice it and then leave, and just work your way up from there.
when he gets to breeding age he'll be much more social. What size tank is he in?
