I have a 5 inch red devil who had a nice hump going, but once I removed two of his tankmates and after he killed the other his hump is now much smaller then before. Is there a reason for this?

***125 GALLON: 1 Red Devil and 1 12 inch pleco.
60 GALLON: 1 Vieja Syn, 1 Jack Dempsey and 1 Green Terror.***

It is thought by some, that a hump is a dominance trait, so without the other RDs to display to, the energy used to create and keep it, may be best used elsewhere.

So he could be a she as well. I thought the hump made it a male.

I agree with this. Hormones obviously play into this as well. We no other fish around to increase it dominant hormones it has probably relaxed up a lot. Kind of along the lines when flowerhorn keepers put a mirror in the tank to increase kok size

get him a girlfriend if the tank is big enough!-)

It will be just my luck that I end up with two males that will try to kill each other

The link that I posted explains it all in great detail.

Your fish is most likely a male, but hyper dominant females can be very aggressive as well as have a nuchal hump. Venting is the only accurate way to sex your fish.

Thanks RD

I also noticed a pointy white tube sticking out when he had the larger hump. Thats another thing that made me think he was a he
