Your fish is most likely a male, but hyper dominant females can be very aggressive as well as have a nuchal hump. Venting is the only accurate way to sex your fish.

Hi there . I have a 8 inch red devil with no hump from what I can see . If you were to vent it . What would the difference look like between male and female . And is the same for venting other cichlids

Welcome to MFK! As well as digging up this old dead thread haha.

Female cichlids have an egg tube that drops down and is visibly blunt in comparison to a males organ which is very pointy.

There is many examples found on the internet, just search "sexing cichlids" and whatever information you read should apply to your RD as well.

Females would have a larger hole in front of the anus whereas a males would be a hole smaller than his anus.....when viewed from below.

Best bet is to watch the area carefully from the side and determine if its blunt or pointy, should be pretty visible on an 8" fish when its out

its pretty easy to sex them via side on venting at 6 inch.

Hi I was wonder what tell tale signs to look for in determining sex when venting . Sorry I have not been fish keeping ( especially breeding ) I have a 8 inch RD and a 8.5 inch oscar . And some JDs
. I would love to know what sex they all are and I hear venting is the most thorough way

I would suggest starting a new thread asking all the questions you want to know, as well as add pics of your current fish.

Sexing cichlids is tough sometimes depending on the species. Some species are very different visibly while others (like oscars) are very tough to sex without venting.

I am definitely not an expert on sexing, but as stated above, there will be a visual difference between a females egg tube(blunt) and a males reproductive organ(spikey/pointy).

Those are the tell tale signs, visually inspecting the reproductive organs (venting) or possible physical differences eg. size, coloring, fin shape.

100% way to sex is to observe spawning and see which one is laying the eggs.
