I have a 90 gallon tank with an aquaclear 110 and aquaclear 70, I did two water changes first water change was 30% and then 4 days later 50%.. The only reason I did that type of change was because my water keep on turning green. I also have a 125 gallon tank and it does not turn green. Whats going here??? Am i having a filtration issue. Can anyone please help, tried searching the subject but kept on getting results for green terrors.. lol thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like algae bloom. How long has the tank been up and running, and is it cycled? Whats the water parameters?

There can a number of things that can cause green water. I just went through the same deal with my tank. First thing I will ask you is, do you have a phosphate test kit? Second, do you feed flake or pellet food and what brand? Flake food tends to have higher phosphates than pellet foods. Third, what are your water parameters? Fourth, what is your lighting schedule and is the tank near a window? Fifth, how often do you clean your tank, water change, vaccum gravel, etc? Sixth, what are your tap water parameters?

The problem in my tank was I had high phosphate levels, due to over feeding :) So what I did was I did a 50% water change the first day and I did not turn on the tank lights (some people put a blanket over the tank) for 5 days, why? As with any type of algae, if it gets no light it will not grow. Trust me, having lights off will not hurt the fish in case you worry about that. Everyday that the lights were off I did a 40% water change. Second I did not feed my fish on the first 2 days of the "treatment". On the third day I turned on the lights to see if the water was still green (it was but not as it was at first) and I vaccumed 50% of the gravel and gave the fish a lite feeding and turned of the lights off. On the fifth day the water was not green anymore and everything went back to normal.

*Disclaimer* This worked for me but your situation could be different.

Thanks for the advice.. I have no idea what my phosphate levels are.. I will check when i get home.. I will do a 50% water change today and put cover the tank with a blanket... BTW i feed my fish krill, bloodworms and silversides.. The tank parameters were normal as of yesturday.. and the tank has been up and running for about 5 months..

Ok sounds good. Check phosphates if you can. Btw, you did not mention lighting schedule or if the tank is near a window. Phosphates are usually the main culprit for an algae bloom, but to much lighting or direct sun light can cause it too.

I had the same problem so I went to walmart and got this stuff for 5 bucks..........problem solved. It cleared my tank in two hours.

This will clear the water, but I would still check your water parameters and find the cause of your algae bloom.

jbru thanks for answering my next question i wanted to know if there was a some kind of chemical that can kill the algea

No problem, always happy to help out a fellow fishkeeper

just be cautious using that chemical stuff. its not my first choice as it contains copper which can have negative effects on plants fish and inverts. do not use if you have inverts. also, follow the label carefully....... overdosing can harm or even kill your plants and fish
