Why isn't Cutteri more popular?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think that cutteri are pretty popular, at least among cichlid hobbyists. I don't think that they're being commercially farmed the way that convicts, JDs, firemouths, oscars, etc. are...so that's why Petsmart and other chains don't carry them. I bring quite a few to local stores and sell quite a few to hobbyists.

Also, cutteri pretty recently understood as "different" than spliurum. The most important thing is to recognize that all cutteri and splirum aren't the "same" - basically each river system has its own version (kind of like different parts of lake Malawi have different peacocks).

Here's a thread about my F1 "Rio Jutiapa" pair from Ken Davis (fishfarm).

Matt

Good point Matt, our city is flooded with them now, but, I had never seen one in person until a couple years ago. I have to be honest, I don't know the provenance of this strain, but, looking at the juvies, you would never imagine that they would turn out like this guy! LOL Do you still have your Cutteri from Ken?

Although your city is flooded with them now... it won't be in a year. Most who bought them will have killed them or will be just keeping a single fish in a year. It's the cycle of things...

That's exactly what happened in my area: a couple of people (including me) got them and bred them, distributed them through the clubs and LFS... so that "everyone" had them. That made them no longer desirable to many. Which resulted in a lot of people quitting keeping them and few people breeding them.

Other than me: I still have my F1 pair (sold my other F1 pair), which breeds regularly... as well as lots of F2 grow-outs ranging in size from 1" to 3" (which have also begun breeding)... and I think I'm the only guy in my area who's bothered to keep track of provenance (i.e. not found a "cutteri" at a LFS or auction and bred it to the ones verifiably from "Rio Jutiapa" stock)...

I probably have 4-5 F2 pairs left (a couple are spoken for) :)

Very nice picture and fish.

Seems like the only ones getting publicity are HRP.

Thanks, HRP doesn't hold a candle to these guys IMHO :D

Again, well said, it seems that fish go through cycles everywhere, what is popular and common here may be unheard of and very desirable in other parts of the country.

Glad to hear you are still working with yours, that is great that you are spreading them around, hopefully to responsible fish keepers just like you are and they will continue to stay in the hobby. Now, come on Matt, lets see some pics of them now that they are fully mature  I am going to check with the farm that mine came from to see if I can get the origin on them, I got them as mature fish :D

Here are mine. I got one spawn and keep the largest fry to grow out. Very cool fish and when breeding very aggressive. They are much larger now and I only have two females and the one larger fry. The male got sick and was put down.

I had a huge colony of them for the loongest time, sadly enough they started to get picked off/die from stress of being chased. I've been meaning to get more but you guys really made me want more, I love cutteri.

Good luck getting more of them, well worth it IMHO!

I just picked up some cutteri for Bigspizz, so I guess I could say I owned them for a matter of hours. I actually just picked up some nanoleutus for him as well, I'll try to snap some photos of them. Sajica should be in the mail next week too. :D
