simple explanation: because people like them. people keep fish they like and thats the bottom line.

Yep. Piranhas are no extra different than any other fish it. It's like asking, why keep plecos?

I am hoping to prove you wrong with my group :headbang2

Just wait for the mass cannibalism to start.. all pygo's cannibalize a little bit.. but piraya are known to eat their tankmates out of the blue(even other piraya) and when larger have a real problem getting along.

I've only seen two over 20" online.. One is "Frank" who resides in Canada now I think and is 22"(brought in by George at SA at a large size) and the other was in japan and it looked like it was 900 years old and was sorta deformed/beat.

They are nice though..

Why do I get a mental image of a piranha swimming with a cane?? Weird....lol

I would hate to come across those fish in a dark alley!!

I was waiting for the cannibalism to start since I got them at 3" but I have been able to so far have ZERO deaths to cannibalism... Even though 2 other people who also started with a group of 10 piraya both had 3 deaths to cannibalism.

I know they attack each other randomly when they are big because of breeding agression but they will be in a much larger tank by that time.

I'm not sure if it's due to breeding aggression or downright aggression but I know that 22" piraya that was put with other larger piraya(only smaller by 6" or so) and they were dead soon after trying to cohab him.. I don't think tank size had anything to do with it.

But wish you luck. Nothing would be nicer than a very large shoal of large piraya.

I saw a video of the same 22" piraya that is now in Hamilton, ON grouped with many smaller piraya without a problem. A guy named Wes (alias Piranha King) had him before Al and he had a lot of 8" piraya with him and I dont think there were any problems.

I am hoping that since my group has been together from a small size that there will be fewer problems and I also watch their behaviour very closely.

My goal is to eventually have a massive cement tank with 6 of these guys at 18-20" :headbang2
