sorry if its a stupid question :banhim:but from all the videos I see of awesomely HUGE CA/SA Cichlids....how come owners keep very little substrate in their tanks to the point you see areas showing the bare bottom of the tank? Is it to have as clean water as possible purposes? More room for the cichlid? I guess I just always wanted to know if there was any advantages to doing this :screwy:

I too have noticed that alot of people will have little to no gravel or substrate in their tanks.. I believe its just down to preference. It does not have a positive effect on the fish or their environment.

Also a lot of SA/CA cichlids will dig and rearrange the gravel until there is glass showing.

Yea totally get that they move substrate around...but I still see tanks w/ barely any substrate even for the large cichlid to move...i guess its just preference for simplicity

Ahh makes sense...water cleanliness efficiency

If you do REGULAR maintenance on the tank it won't matter. Just more gravel syphoning is all. More work.

I think part of the fun is cichlids digging.

I can understand the poop accumulating in the gravel. Gotta use that sand!

I haven't used gravel in a while.
