Cichlids LOVE to move substrate around. I won't deprive them of that because I'm too lazy to do a little extra maintenance. They're already forced to live in a small glass box, I feel they need some kind of pleasure in their life. Even if it's something as insignificant as digging in a sandbox.
Why Less Substrate for Larger CA/SA Cichlids?

I use sand. It's easy to keep clean and looks better than gravel. You also don't have as much hidden waste.
