Why letting goldfish go wild is a bad idea: They become giant pests

You can have all the laws, rules & regulations you want in place, but at the end of the day you can't stop stupid.
If you stop the stupid from getting fish then the stupid wont happen right? I dont think anyone will go to the black market to get a fish for their 3 year old

I don't necessarily believe it's a matter of educating people because I truly feel that a lot of these people who release them already KNOW they shouldn't; I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they simply don't CARE.

+1

Stop the stupid from getting fish? Spend some time in a pet store amigo, the majority of new pet (fish) owners are stupid.
if fish are banned. i read THE ENTIRE LFS stories thread so i have seen some stupid lol. the one guy at the lfs (young and new) Gives out terrible advice (fish only grow to the size of the tank etc) so i understand where you come from

So your idea is to ban any/all potentially invasive species? I'm sure that will go over well with the masses. Also, even in areas where such bans already exist, fish are still shipped/smuggled in illegally. Eventually you are back at square one. This is a people problem, not a fish problem.

Here in the states, particularly here in the Atlantic coastal plain, it is not uncommon for our carp fishermen to catch fish in the 20"+, 5lbs. range. If it's one thing we have, it is our very rich Cyprinidae populations and thousands of cold-water tributaries to support them....native or not.

He was on Dr. Phil yesterday and he DEFINITELY has some Daddy-issues with you.

I no he has daddy issues, thats why he's a stripper now...

there are a few blanket bans in south africa, it took a while for most ornamental shrimp to be legalised

two things:
1. that's outrageous...I've spent probably $1700 total on the 800+ gallons I have in my house....
2. Balls load of money cracked me up in my cubicle at work, thank you.
Glad I could make someone laugh with my terrible Australian slang. :D

And as for how much it costs me to keep my fish, that's part of the reason my blood boils when I get people on here telling me to just "look on Craig's list" for a 6ft tank... Second hand a 6'x2'x2' would probably cost about $1500 - and I would consider that cheap... I think we do well for people on a low income to keep our fish the way we do. :)

hahahahaha "balls loads" she said balls loads

Caught wild goldfish and bullfrog's about 1 mile from where I grew up, but now the area is industrial. I believe they filled the pond with topsoil. :( I absolutely agree with the don't dump pet fish of any kind in native water 's.

If we ban goldfish, we will see underground goldfish rings, like everything else people try to ban, it will make it harder to regulate out here I know of underground businesses for almost anything banned, be it piranhas, full auto goods, etc etc
