Why New Life Spectrum???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I suspect that squirtles "aquaculture feed" is high in both protein, as well as crude fat. Most commercial aquaculture feeds are high in fat to increase palatability, and increase growth. I have stated many times over the years that if ones main objective is massive gains in growth - feed a low cost trout chow. I wouldn't due to the very real risk of fatty acid deposits on the liver etc, but most commercial trout farms aren't looking at keeping their fish as pets for several years or more. Their main consideration is getting the fish as large as they can, as quickly as humanly possible, for as little cost as possible.

That should not be a hobbyists main objective.

edied to add; - Jamie beat me to it! :)

The real question is, is the fastest growth possible what is best for the long term health of the animal? And the answer to that is definitely no.

I've been feeding NLS only for the last three years and couldn't be happier (just bought a 5lb pail of the 3mm sinking). But I'm also not trying to grow Jabba the Hutt fish as quickly as possible...Someone send me a "healthy" fish that dies suddenly of no apparent reason and I'll do a necropsy and show you the fatty deposits on the liver from improper feeding.

I agree with this I have also been using NLS for several years and I am completely happy with the results. I get steady and even growth with minimum waste. My fish are active and have great appitites. You can supplement if you want but I have not found it necessary. I have been in this hobby for a few years and based on the results I've had NLS is the best food I have ever used.

I agree, long term health is far more important than fast growth. Umbees get big enough as it is, why rush?

There are beneficial things which only exist in 'living' foods. they are destroyed by processing and even begin dying off after harvest. Those aren't on lists of essential "nutrients".
Enzymes come to mind. Hence the otherwise unattainable benefits of eating raw foods, ie; fresh vegetables. I see no reason why fish won't benefit equally as much as humans & animals. Any nutrition savvy oncologist will get patients on those foods, daily. Why wait till life is already compromised?
Wild fish graze on live algae, living fish eggs etc. You may not find a special vitamin or mineral list, HOWEVER let's face reality: mainline nutritionists are only trained to measure known ("you'll die, or develop disease without it") nutrients.
Even if a wild carnivorous fish doesn't graze, they eat fish with bellies full of fresh items. Look at wolves & grizzlies etc, they always eat the guts first.
:-)

I have no argument with that petspoiler, but the *live* foods that are typically fed in this hobby are no where near the same as what a fish would find & consume in the wild. That would include frozen and/or freeze dried midge fly larvae, store bought crickets, meal worms, superworms, etc.

Even if a wild carnivorous fish doesn't graze, they eat fish with bellies full of fresh items.

Yes, something that I have been stating for many years, and the precise reason why NLS contains kelp, seaweed, several micro-algae, and spirulina in all of their formulas. Even those fish classified as carnivorous consume some aquatic plant matter in their diet via their prey.

But that doesn't mean that one can replace that fresh aquatic plant matter, with terrestrial based vegetables from the grocery store, or canned peas. That's not the same, either ....

BTW - There are beneficial things which exist in 'processed' foods, that also aren't on lists of essential "nutrients".

Immune stimulants, growth promoting substances, etc, have been found in a number of feed stuffs of animal origin designed for aquaculture use, such as fish meal, squid meal, etc. Nutritionists know these substances are there, but even with today's science they have never been able to properly identify them.

I have used NLS for a while now and I am very happy with the results! Also at around $50 for a 5 pound tub shipped it is one of the most affordable fish foods I have used! Switched from Hikari bio gold+ and the NLS is cheaper! Thats what the fellow to the left was raised on but genetics can't be denied with him!
