Hi everyone. I was wondering why fish stores don't let you take pictures of fish or anything else. Is it because the fish stores don't want the competition to know how healthy the fish are and how much they cost? I tried searching for the answer but couldn't find any posts. Thanks, Ed.

The petsmart, petco, and nearby lfs don't care if I take pictures. I think it depends on the store owner

its usually because they know they are doing something wrong/ bad and they don't want a huge worldwide crowd to know.

Sometimes few fish stores do sell illegal fish species but most of times it's usually bad husbandry (dirty tanks, dead fish etc)

This was the reason for one of my lfs.

No other one cares here! One even takes pics sometimes and posts on facebook

Never had this problem before. They probably have something to hide. Having someone take pictures of the fish I am trying to sell and send them to their friends is called free advertisement in my book.

Being in San Francisco, we have a lot of mom and pop fish stores. There's one that I've been to (not to buy) that has a high turnover rate so the fish prices are very low. But, they want the customers to get a net and bucket themselves to get the fish you want. That means people with dirty, greasy hands are in the tanks and the customers really stress the fish buy moving all over the tank to get the fish they want. Even with the high turnover rate, they're still a lot of dead fish in their tanks. They have a lot of exotic fish and also a 4 foot lemon shark that they keep in a 5 feet by 5 feet tank. The shark can barely turn around!!! There's another fish store that have higher prices and the fish look healthy and the tanks are clean. They also have some exotic fish and they don't let people take pictures either.

The store that has the shark is called 6th Avenue Aquarium. It's located at 6th and Clement street. The cleaner one is called Hung Ming and it's at Geneva and Oriente Street. Let us know about your experience at the stores.
