Why No Pictures

Maybe they worry that the pics are for a competitor and are of stock AND prices?

Are you talking about 6th avenue? I moved out of the bay area a few years ago but I used to go there all the time. I never bought anything but they have an amazing selection.

Yeah, that's the one. They have a great selection of fresh and saltwater fish. On Sundays, people line up before they open because they have a big sale of saltwater fish and creatures. The prices are really cheap, BUT, the bags have the prices written on them with a Sharpie and all the bags are placed floating on top of their saltwater tanks. People take bags, bring them back and grab other bags to look at. That means that many people with their dirty hands are touching everything. At least the new selection are safe from dirty hands but I feel bad for the saltwater selection already in the tanks. People grabbing bags then plopping them back must be a real stressor for the fish in the tanks. Again, their prices are low because of their huge turnover rate because I've been there a couple of Sunday afternoons and most of the bags have been bought. Now I know why there are 2 big tanks upstairs. First, there are fish that no one really wants because they are too big for the average person and secondly, all of the fish have diseases or are in bad health. The last time I was there, there were a couple of big Oscars with most of their faces gone because of neglect which probably why they are upstairs. Also, they have Chinese gods with incense all over the store and they have hip hop music blaring. The owner is a man named Dave but all the other workers are teenagers that have an attitude like you are doing them a favor by going to the store. Just look, don't buy. Use Yelp and look at the reviews and you will know what I'm talking about, Ed. Here's the link to the Yelp reviews. http://www.yelp.com/biz/6th-avenue-aquarium-san-francisco-2 Let me know what you guys think after reading the reviews. There are many good reviews about their bettas but the bettas are kept in covered cups so no one is reaching in and grabbing one.

I been to 6th, bought a couple fish. Fish aren't as bad as I was expecting. The owner is nice but yeah the others have attitude. Great selection though. But just like with any fish store, inspect the fish for health. There's quite a few fish I've seen there for awhile so they've survived at least a couple months there, seems about average. Yes the self serve thing is kinda unusual, but they do the prices to make it worth it. I'm by no means saying everyone should buy there, but its more of just be self aware. Fish in the stores are meant to be bought, and a lot are in tanks way to small for them, but I guess they do what they gotta do to keep the business open. If you don't like the facts don't go there. I'm not saying its the best, but its not that much worse than the average lfs I think. My gf definitely doesn't like the way they keep fish there though.

I don't think it's worth getting a fish from bad, unhealthy conditions just because they are cheap. I hope you quarantine the fish before you put them in your tank. You get what you pay for. Also, let me know what other lfs you are comparing them with? I've been keeping fish for 30 years and have never been in a store as bad as this one.

Let me describe more about the store. They have a flower shop that's in front of the doorway. You enter and the place is packed with fish, supplies, and other creatures. The place is dirty and smells like mold. There is a lot of foot traffic through there from people that just want to look at the wide and exotic fish. If you go to the back of the store, there's a nasty bathroom and a bunch of huge plastic tubs with feeder goldfish and plants. Upstairs there is a very narrow walkway with a low railing that probably will fall apart if you touch it. Upstairs are where they keep the more expensive exotic fish that experienced fish keep. Every morning one of the worker goes by every tank to take out the dead fish. There are probably dead fish in every tank. Then they take a container with black worms and they take about a tablespoon and put the worms in each tank no matter how many fish are in the tank. The reason I know this is because I know one of the workers there.

Over here its because a lot of the stores are ADA aquascape contest winners and dont want people stealing their scape ideas...

Other stores is because they dont want people taking pics of their rare fish and passing it off as their own to sell online (scam people)

I find if you know the owners they are generally okay with you taking pics, its just they dont want every random person coming through taking pics....

Most store, not just fish store, doesn't allow camera for security purpose. They don't know whether you take picture of the fish/item or case the store

The petsmart, petco, and nearby lfs don't care if I take pictures. I think it depends on the store owner
