why not feeders ?????

feeders may carry disease from low quality water from the LFS, they re also not sufficient as a staple food as they do not carry all the vitamins, minerals, and calcium that they do in the wild. in the wild these "feeders" would be able to feed on plants, algae , and dead stuff; all these foods carry the essentials for bigger fish. in the pet store, they live in poor quality tanks and are often over fed.

In conclusion, feeder fish do not carry essential vitamins, minerals, or calcium. they are very fatty, and may carry disease. i buy like 16 feeders for my 100gallon every couple months, but not very often as they are NOT a healthy food and are FAR from being a sufficient staple food.
I hope this answered your question.

goldfish are no more natural than the processed fish foods we give our fish anyways, so whats the problem? predatory fish dont eat market prawns in the wild. they dont eat pellets. they dont eat beef heart, or other types of seafood. they eat other fish most of the time. so goldfish would be the most natural food for them.

Except that goldfish are man made and not found in the wild, at all. Neither are pellets, but pellets do not have thiaminase in them, so they are a much healthier alternative to goldfish. And not necessarily feeders. If you raise your own feeders that are not cyprinids, then they are some of the best things you can feed your fish.

thank you i<3fish that is the best answer i have read so far ;)
so goldfish are the problem..... hmmm
hey turtles if they are over fed flakes wouldnt they have tons of vitamins and nutrients?? im sure it takes a good quality flake or pelet to grow the goldies fast and keep them fat. it woudnt really benifit the breeders if they bred unhealthy fish bc they would just die. and they would go out of business.
i just think that maybe people should think a little before they say feeders are soooo horrible and your fish will die if it eats live fish
honestly goldfish and rosies and guppies are the CLOSEST to natural food you can get easily. i am thinkin about breeding convicts but even then thats not free (water,electricity,food...) but it seems like a good alternative

and thats where the concept of "gut loading" comes in. feed your feeders a healthy food, then feed them to your fish, its a win-win. i also think goldfish are the best food source, provided they are clean, quarantined, and well fed, like i mentioned

Well, convicts are the easiest breeders IMO because they don't eat their young. Technically, if you kept feeders healthy and fed them quality food, they would be good food. Unfortunately, most petstores pack them together and feed them cardboard.

Just get your feeders on a quality pellet i feed mosquito fish from my pond sometimes i will scoop a bunch out put them in a 6 gallon and feed them cichlid gold then feed

See, as far as "sick fish are bad for business", they can (and do) sell sick fish, whereas it is far more expensive to properly feed and stock them.

rosie reds are better than goldfish because goldfish have thiamesse that can stunt your fish

would breeding your own shrimp also help with a fishes diet? since they eat bugs, shrimp, crawfish and whatever they can catch
