Many of us love them, and some of us have decent collections of them - so why aren't people breeding them? I have not heard of one single person report a breeding on here - that I've seen (without dredging through the archives) - Many have been around for quite a few years - plenty of time to get some spawning going - so what gives?

People are breeding many variants with inconsistent success. I'm not sure that people who keep pikes and would like to breed them know what they have to do with them to get them into breeding mode and I'm guessing that those who do aren't into sharing that info publicly. I do know a few who have bred pikes and would never set foot on a fish forum. I'm sure a google search would bring lots of info.

And then there's a number of people trying to breed some of the species that have never bred in captivity. Like me. :D

Most of the desired pikes get pretty big and being an aggressive species needs lot of room for courtship and hiding places during fights. There are not many people willing to devote a 700-1000 gallon tank to attempt breeding.

Cha - what species are you working with ?
Discus - most Pikes stay around 12 inches on average, right ? But my question also applies to the many smaller ones - I'm just surprised, since they are excellent "Monster Fish" and most of us love our Cichlids.

I'm working with lents, not yet full grown, and a group of Atabapo I red pikes, which are in the 12" range. They've got some growth to go through yet.

Very nice! I had a great group of "strigata" back in the 90's. Wish I had kept them. Would love to get a few new pikes. Just have one sveni right now. It just developed a dorsal blotch, so I assume it's a female.

Currently a friend working with Atabapo I adults 12-14". Just a trio is still fighting in a 700 gallon vat. If they see each other they want to kill each other, it's giving them enough room that they actually get to spawning mood.

Even small pikes at 6-8" full grown need way more room than you think to breed. Keeping them and breeding them are two totally different ideas.
