Why do people say a 40 is to small for a single rd.It is just as wide as a 55 and just as long as a 75.Im not trying to start a argument but could someone please explain without a attitude because i wanna no honestly.I already am putting a magnum canister 350 on the tank next to a ac 200 filter. It looks fairly happy in the tank at 6 inches

Probably because the lack of water will be hard to keep "clean" even with a lot of filtration. IMO a full grown RD will need something larger than a 55. They have potential to surpass a foot in length, right?

plus, if a 40 breeder has the same footprint as a 55, why not just go ahead and get another 15 gallons of water for that little boost of stability?

o ok im planning on upgrading to a 90 for a pair of reddevils is that alright.

as long as they get along I dont see a problem with that.

Yeah it's partly down to the water quality and water stability that a larger tank gives.

In theory you could put a few 1 foot plus fish in a tank that's 2 foot by 2 foot by say 15 inches high. They'd certainly have enough room to turn around, but the amount of water would be insufficient even with good filtration.

My 60 gallon, gal for gal, is as well filtered as my 190 yet I have to do more water changes, and the water is never as clear, even though there is only a cuban gar in there and a couple of small fish.

Because there isnt enough room....Plain and simple! That 55 gallon for one large cichlid is old news. Now we know that most of our large cichlids get even larger then what we thought. IMO RD should not be kept in anything less than a 75. They get too big!

id do a 75 for one and 125 for a pair

The way I look at it, would you rather live in a house or in the guest bedroom for the rest of your life? You would still have room to turn around and move but you would go nuts.

I have a friend who has a red devil in a 29 gallon eclipse tank he changes 30% of the water daily on an automated system. This is a damn good looking fish very fat good eye color. I got the fish at about 2 inches gave it to him at about 7 inches. it is over a foot in length now. He feeds it a diet of nightcrawlers, white grubs and helgemites. I do not advocate keeping a fish of this size in a 29 gallon tank but with a good routine of daily water changes and a regulated diet it can be done.
