why not put a rd in 40 with good filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Somebody must have missed snack time. 29g for a RD? Are we talking about living in the guest bedroom or the closet in the guest bedroom? That poor fish.

I have a friend who has a red devil in a 29 gallon eclipse tank he changes 30% of the water daily on an automated system. This is a damn good looking fish very fat good eye color. I got the fish at about 2 inches gave it to him at about 7 inches. it is over a foot in length now. He feeds it a diet of nightcrawlers, white grubs and helgemites. I do not advocate keeping a fish of this size in a 29 gallon tank but with a good routine of daily water changes and a regulated diet it can be done.

I have a ~8" RD/Midas in a 75gal and that fish really "fills" that tank. Keeping one in a 30X12 tank is just plain stupid.....

I think some people need to remember what this forum is for.... It is here to be able to ask questions and get REAL answers not "your an ***hole" some people (including me) need what some people consider dumb questions answered. If some of you are as smart as you think you are then HELP not Hinder.....

Just my two cents

Oh and large_cichlids, its a steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss), not a salmon...

actually, that was out of line. Keep it civil.

this is how i raised my devils large cichlids i got a 125 gal community tank all cichlids were between 1" and3" and i grew them out for just over 1 year.at the end of the year the devils were about 5" female 6" male they had spawned twice with no luck do to the other cichlids therr my jags were also present at this time and about the same size and spawn rate needless to say things for the other single cichlids in the tank it was hell:cry: so it was time to get more tanks like i was already planning and saving for.i got 2 75 gals i put the devils in 1 and the jags in the other and how they stayed for 1 year making lots of fry .at the end of that year the male was 9" and the female was 7" with a weakly water changes of 50% somtimes more water change is everything large cichlids.then i had to get another 125 gal and move the jags and devils up to there final home 125:headbang2 i was planning ahead for taking care of big cichlids:grinno: thats what you have got to do for devils dude u need to be saving for that big tank and where are u going to put it alot of steps and money involved. bur right now i got a sweet pair of devils male is 12" female 9" and the jags are about the same size as well the devils have made me just over 400$ in the past 2 years selling their fry to lfs at .75 each:naughty: u can do this to u just got to get big tanks dude i hope this helps u out alot of different opinions out there on all the above paramiters but this works for me.:headbang2

I wouldn't put a Red Devil in anything less than an 18" wide tank and something 24" wide would be more suitable. I have seen numerous in person RD's that were 14-15". So yes maybe 18" is enough for them to turn around. I am getting tired of people feeling good about themselves by offering their fish enough room to turn around. Why not double that width? Everyone needs to start thinking Monster and not just what will get them by.

* On another not my ex girlfriend has a 9" or so thick red devil in a 29 gallon by itself. The fish is healthy and eats well. It has been beaten to the brink of death on two occasions when she tried to introduce it to her 125 gallon comm cichlid tank. So yes a fish of that size can survive in a much smaller tank but is it experiencing the same quality of life that it would if it was in a 180? I doubt it
