UGF to a WD is a big jump. If you go buy either at the store, the UGF will cost about 10% of the wet/dry. But yes a wet/dry will be a more effective filter.

I think the bacteria might be different too. I think the W/D would house more aerobic bacteria and the UGF anaerobic bacteria. Anyone know if this right? Just a thought.

And sorry about the little scuffle on the last page... I meant no harm.

Wet Drys are still pretty cheap if you DIY but the bacteria are the same. Nitrosomas, nitrobacter, and nitrospira. These are the bacteria that do all the ammonia-->nitritite-->nitrate breakdowns. Anaerobic bacteria are what break down nitrates. Just because the UGF and its biomaterial are in the water doesn't mean that it is anaerobic. If that was the case, all the fish would be dead (they need the air too).

As a moderator for IGN.com for the last 5 years all I can say is.....

If you use powerhead(s) on your UGF you won't get a buildup under the plate. The first time I ever threw a powerhead on an upspout was the last time I ever used an airstone. The crap that powerhead pumped out from my plate scared me straight.

Just giving my opinion, Delete me if you wan't I don't give a ****..........Li will just unban me so whateva.....If you keep large cichlids UGF's are a disaster due to all the digging. But I guess if you keep smaller occupants they can be inexpensive and practical but I believe good waterflow and maximum GPH keeps large fish healthier and water clarity better which is something a UGF can't compare too. Sorry if I upset anyone....."Merry Christmas" everyone......

 your invincible because you know Li..... GROW UP, you sound like a spoilt brat!

Unfortunately, this has turned into name calling and has gone way too far off topic.
