For monster fish there are rubbermaids, swimming pools, etc that can be had on the cheap. Not to mention slow growth rates for some larger species. For that reason I carry little concern for what people buy/keep as long as it's legal. I joined this site for that reason. And that IMO has been what made this site better than any other. Freedom to do what you want. Enough respect for fellow hobbiests that they can buy/sell/keep as they please within reason without persecution.

Good points, but the "within reason" part of your last sentence is the key.

So under that logic we could all proudly sell drugs and weapons to anyone that wants them?

Sorry to be critical, especially since the first part of your comments made a lot of sense, but I can only agree with letting vendors off the hook if they also make a considerable effort towards education. Short of that, vendors are profitting off the ignorance of consumers and at the suffering of their livestock.

Require more of the vendors prior to the point of sale, and you and I will be in agreement.
apples and oranges, cant compare the trade of fish (legal species) to drugs and weapons (illegal). as for vendor education, etc etc. thats a fairytale wish, maybe in a perfect world.

sorry man, it's just not gonna happen! and vendor's job is not to educate. all they do is supply the fish people demand and supply them alive. thats it and thats what people want. and yes its sad, but vendors do profit off the public's ignorance. not only fish vendors, but any vendor that sells ANYTHING. thats just how the world works

Which perspective is a better reflection of the MFK ethos?

A) It's better to not keep a monster fish if you don't have the facilities to house it...

or

B) Everyone should keep monster fish because they're cool and I want to tell people about the ___________ that I own

My vote's for A...

The question is whether some fish are too big or otherwise unsuitable to be kept in anything less than a public-aquarium-sized facility.

well according to the site's creator, the name MFK is not about the size of the fish you keep. "monster" refers to one's passion and dedication :headbang2

WORD!!!

Is it right to keep an aro in a 125 for life, nah but it happens everyday. I don't blame fish stores for not asking their customers their tank size or anything like that. If I went to a fish store and was harassed about tank size on a fish I would just leave. It's our decision, it might not be the best but it's our decision if we want a Monster or not. Plus like MsMassPoly said it's MonsterFishKeepers, this site breathes and lives Monster fish. Might not be ethical to some extent but nothing is perfect, we keep the fish we want.

several months ago, someone bought up the topic of ST datnoid

and then within weeks (including me)

got a ST datnoid.. and then a few weeks later, people are selling them back out

Can't agree more. The Vendors I'm sure love fish and keep plenty of their own and would never want anything bad to happen to the fish they sell but at the end of the day it's a business and we all have families to feed.

A lot of you made very good point on keeping monster fish but seeing an arowana in a 4ft broke my heart and not being able to do something was the worst part. I only have 3ft now with no monster fish. I've been working on getting a 6ft (200g) for the last six months. It's suppose to be for my birthday present but financially it's taking longer than planned. I want to keep some monsters in that, but will never keep one in an unethical way. Even my pleco is staying with someone else untill I have a tank where I can house it in and I miss him so not being able to see him when I want but he will come back home he is about a year old now
