Why use T5?

Well, Fat Homer, what u said is true, but LEDs r too new to determine how long they will be efficient. Prices r coming down and now is the time to try different things. My 48 in.LED is only 5 months old and doing great so far. It's 96 watts, with 4800 lumans , and a lot brighter than my 260 watt power compact.
Personally I'd go with medal halides but cost way too much to run for 8 hrs a day

Op. Try ridgid Led. They make kits.
I haven't tried them yet but going to in the future

You are quite right, since there is an LED fixture i myself have been eyeing but the price is not worth it imo at over usd $500+ for a 24" fixture...

I am sure with time we'll see LED's get better, but prices need to come down as well before it'll get me hooked

t5 over most led fixtures any day on a planted tank. strong light output, broad spectrum lighting, and relatively low cost make them great. yes i rave about LEDs, but unless you are prepared to spend a good chunk of money on a plant specific led, you will have issues. even some of the best LEDs made for plant growth dont do great (ada aquasky and stem plants) i am excited to see what my kessil will do through water, ive only used it on an emersed setup but noticed great growth, but like i said not cheap($250 for something that will cover about 2x2' area)
