It's all about personality for me. I love that cichlids will recognize individual people. Also, I'm attracted to the coloration and large size of most cichlids.

The high level of aggression is actually one of my least favorite aspects. I wish I could keep a Midas, GT, JD, con, Nic, FM, all together in a reasonable size tank. That'll never happen unless I have a huuuuuuuge tank.

This, x2.

In addition to those mentioned before...

...Breeding behavior & parental care!

oh yeah.. I remembered my first pair of H. Cyano. teamed up and whoop my tank and put them into my friends tank and they whooped his tank too. That was my first time witnessing the team up and I remember forever.

And yes they do recognize ppl. If someone different walks in my room, they know and get a bit scared.

Its about the personality and behavior for me, then next would be their colors. I like that they have attitude also, I think its cute and funny. But I wish some of them weren't so overly aggressive. Lucky for me though I have had cichlids that have been tolerable of eachother.

Variety.

I started with cichlids around 10 years ago. I remember I had a small tank with a couple of convicts that my mom soon made me get rid of. After that, I got rid of the tank completely.

About two years ago I left home for college. Soon enough, I got a 20-gallon tank that I stuffed too many cichlids in. Nothing too special, just bright colored cichlids from Petco. After about a month of looking, I bought a 180-gallon tank that to upsize. Around the same time my LFS had a sale on bright blue cichlids that someone had brought in. I bought about 40 of them and grew them out. Ended up getting bored with them even though they looked sweet.

Went back to the LFS a few months ago and they had some nice Tropheus that a had been brought in by a hobbyist. I looked them up online and ended up buying about 30-40 of them to fill the tank. Along the same time, I picked up a bunch of tanks and filters and I decided to expand.

My tropheus ended up in a 75-gallon tank. I filled the 180 with some nice Black Calvus that I plan to grow out. Along with the black calvus I have some Cyprichromis, while I have some Paracyprichromis with the tropheus.

I set up a 90-gallon and a 55-gallon tank that soon became home to some sweet Mpwimbwe frontosa.

All of these fish are unique and beautiful, and that is why I prefer cichlids.

They were the first fish that really made me decide to get a tank(s).
Dovii so smart,pissy and colorful.

Represent!!n :headbang2

my first tank was for an oscar. then from there? it was on.

They are brave fishes. All fishes are dumb compared to us but the cichlid's personality and intelligence makes it easier for them to build a closer bond to us over other kinds of fishes in my opinion. Then complimenting that comes the beauty and size.

I really love the flaring of fins. My favorite favorite favorite of looking at them.:drool::drool:

Must admit, the colours, personality, aggression, parental care and interaction all do it for me! The sad part is I usually get bored after 6months or so and change out for different species.
I have tried snakeheads, community fish, cichlids and oddballs just cant seem to find my true love, though my 9" GT comes very close!

Personality first and foremost. My Chocolate cichlid and other Choco's I've found to be the most interactive. They really do recognize their owners, and strangers, and they grow attached to you as you do them. Their intelligence surpasses that of any other fish I've kept. They're so much more than your usual fish which are basically just decorations on autopilot.

Because they make great pets. They have lots of personality that make them fun. They are smart, come in all size, shape, and color. They are good parents most if the time this makes breeding them interesting.
