He did say 2 years old and 2.5 inches that's not horrible to put him in a 30g

That fish should be around 7-8" at that age... just because it's stunted doesn't mean u should just keep it in a 30gal tank forever. If he's had the fish for over a year and its still not growing, why not give the poor guy some more space??? Definitely won't hurt

30g wouldn't stunt the growth that much. Probably due to his apparent deformity. If not then is he getting enough food? I had an oscar that grew really slowly, then stopped at just over 6". He had been bullied beyond belief in the pet store. Ripped fins, missing scales, the works. I felt sorry for him. I figure that is why he never got very big, even though he became quite healthy and active. Also heard of a similar story from another guy with an albino oscar. It had a broken jaw though and other worse problems. He saved it just before it wen into the trash. Is bullying a possible cause for your JD?

I think bullying could have been a problem before I got him. He was in a 140 with 2 8" oscars, a 10" pleco, and a 5" pike cichlid. When I got the setup I separated the JD in to his own 55 gallon (he hardly ate and swam around) , then about 4 months ago I moved him to a 30 gallon with a few convict fry. He swims a lot now and is eating anything I give him. I have the option of moving him to a bigger tank if needed to.
