why would the cichlids attack and kill a synodontis catfish?

He could also have been sick and dying and not had the energy to flee the Cichlid territories and got the crap kicked out of him....

Did you say you just added a monster yesterday and you find this fish today? That could be the culprit

Either way, I would just keep a close eye and pray that it was an isolated incident...

temp is way too high, like i said drop it to 75 and keep an eye on the tank for a few days , you will notice a big difference in their aggression levels. I keep spiney eels in my mbuna tank and dont have any kind of problems with aggression
