I know they are more rare than other cichlids. But besides that, what is it about them that make ppl go crazy over? I like the aggressiveness, but lots of cichlids have that. I've never seen one in person, so I can not understand it all. Is it something that shines only in person that a camera wont show? I dont mind owning one and might one day, but it's always better to understand more.

I'd say they were so non-popular at one time that they almost completely vanished from the hobby. Kind of like the 'orginal green terror' did. It's only recently that I've seen people getting back into them.

One of the regional variants can easily compete for the prettiest cichlid in the world, depending on the person of course.

Then there are those that believe they are the most aggressive cichlid, which appeals to a large group of aquarists ... well at least on this site. :grinno:

I don't know much about Beanii but I usually like any CA cichlid with attitude and intellect.

Does any one know any thing about glofish?

What do they have to do with Beanii? :grinno:

one of the things that drives certain people (myself included) when it comes to this hobby is to keep all sorts of fish. i suppose there's always been something in me that wants to try something new, something different. i was never really content (and i guess it sadly shows) that i wanted to keep something more odd, more rare, not something everyone else had :)
so after years of keeping things like jags, convicts, red devils i started exploring what else the hobby had to offer and to be honest i've never looked back since. there are so many awesome cichlids and other fish out there to try, to keep and inevitably you start getting into the rare and uncommon stuff, which is kind of where i found myself in the last year. i've been blessed to have got my hands on things such as true parrots, guinacaras, istlanum, beani, wild discus to name a few and it's been a great journey.
so for me at least, my take has always been that i wanted to try something new, and well you can't get much newer for the time being than beani. it's true they may not be the most colorful, most aggressive or what not. it's just the experience of keeping something that's been out of the hobby for a long time that's just exciting. i probably could have been content keeping festae, grammodes and what not, but i decided that there were too many fish out there, and i was in a position in life where i didn't have that much responsibility outside of my own life where i can really pursue the hobby. i can always go back to the fish that got me into the hobby eventually, but as far as i'm concerned those days have not knocked on my doors yet :)

I have only found that to be true of Beani with conspecifics; which is another reason they are so scarce. They are hard to transport because they literally kill each other.

It's an acquired thing. I never used to like them. I was happy with red devils and convicts. Now that I've grown into the hobby I can see what people like them for. I'd say the main ones are Size, aggression, unique look, and personality.

People like fish nobody has, not a lot of people have beani because they can't keep them alive.
