why are all my gars always floating on top of the water? they seem fine, they eat well. no aggression from other tank mates. they always stay on the surface but when i see your gars here, most are on the bottom resting while mine is on the surface.

gar tend to float like a bit of drift wood, its part of how they act. Mine spends about half his time on top and the rest on the bottom, except at night when he is very active. I wouldnt worry ist just what they do, lie and wait.
Yeah whenever I've been on a boat and seen them in the wild they're just floating around link a log. That is until you get to close.
Most Gar will hangout at the surface for long periods of time. If not then they like to lay on the bottom allot too. If they're not floating on top or resting on the bottom then they may be swimming around the middle.
So yeah, they'll usually be at the top, bottom or middle of the tank.
