alright so basically here it is
new tank (hope to use it for breeding discus)
i put in a piece of driftwood i got from a bud and well..
it's growing this opaque coloured slimy fungus on it
it's a clear opaque but it's definately visible..
overnight it grew quite a thick layer.. up to 1/4 inch in some places
any insight would be appreciated.. i've since taken it out of the tank and well.. waiting for replies on it
lemme know what to do.. hopefully i dont have to chuck the piece of driftwood.. it's a REALLY nice piece.. hopin to find out what's goin on
thanks!

Howdy,

That's normal and no problem. It's an initial phenomenon and will not last long (maybe 2 weeks). You can remove it during water changes if you want to. Corys and plecos love to eat it.

do they?!.. hmmmm... maybe i'll put my tiny pleco in the tank with the fungus then..
i JUST took it out of the tank.. i was SOOOOOO scared that i had somethign that would kill my fish.. it's SUCH a good thing i didnt put the discus in that tank.. honestly i was SOOOOOOOOO scared.. so there's not much i can do about that though?

Its normal for driftwood to do that, you cant really do much besides removing the slime manually. Another way is to maybe soak the driftwood in an empty tank for a week before placing it in?

hmm... excess protein remains?? (in tank, water, wood?)

If were me, I'd take out, scrub, boil in hot scalding water, and dry. You just never know what could have been in somebody else's tank?? :uhoh:

boil it if its bothering you, but it will probly come right back

havent tried boiling it.. i've tried drying it out.. same thing
i'm going ot try on the water changes hopefully that does something..
i hope in some time it goes away.. i'll keep you guys posted though.. also hoping this stuff sinks real soon.. for some reason it floats still..
ugh.. this is what i get from not buying the driftwood from a store i guess?! ugh.. :(
anyhow.. i'll keep you guys posted..
as of right now there's some SEEEEEERIous fungus growing on this stuff.. gonna try to syphon it out and hopfully that changes things
in any case i'll keep you guys posted
if i had a camera i'de take some pics for everyone to see
gonna see if i can get one from a neighbour or soemthing
anyhow.. i'de better stop typing or i'll never get off..
i'llk eep you guys posted though!
thanks again!

That fungus usually grows on 'soft wood' or tissue on the wood that will rot easily. Common with mopani/swahala root wood or 'local collected' pieces that are not all that old (less than a couple years in the water. It is less common on Malaysian driftwood becuase that type fo wood has been dead and buried for decades and most of the wood is very dense and will not rot easily.

No harm in the fungus though.. just ugly. As mentioned before, plecos will eat it.
