i got 8 guppies, 3 males and five females about a month ago i have been patiently waiting for them to start having fry , well, i looked into the tank today and saw one little fry swimming around, i looked carefully and didnt see any other fry, after a few seconds i saw a male guppy eat eat the fry . So i quickly took the female guppies out and put them into a 5 gallon bucket, with a little planter type thing to hide in , (kept the water from the original tank though. Well they havent had any more babies since the move to the tank, and i thought they were supposed to have 30 or 40 at a time , so i was wonderin what the hell is going on, They are livebearers right? meaning they give live birth they dont lay eggs right?
PLEASE HELP IM CONFUSED

Probably need to check more often, they dont just come out when you want them to, you have to wait untill they are about to pop and then! Put them somewhere else.

well thats what i was saying they must have just been poppin but there was only 1 little fry
so i moved them
and she stopped giving birth

Guppies are cannibalistic. They will eat their fry once they see them. You're best option is to have a breeder trap or a lot of plants for the fry to hide in.

they have many fry, and if left alone with the fry for almsot any period of time they in fact will eat them. also, the fry are very small and some could be hiding amongst the rocks.

[the larger the female the more fry she can produce]

i move my female after about three weeks into a breeder, and keep watch

i don't know who told you guppys have thirty to forty fry at a time, no chance, in my experience the female doesn't have them all at ounce either. Go to petsmart or whatever and get one of the 2 stage guppy breeders, there like 6 bucks, and whenever you see a female thats really fat, through it in there and when the fry start common out they will go to the bottom where mom cant get them, etc you get the idea, good luck

i had a rather large female that had about 45 fry. while unusual, not impossible.

my last female, slightly smaller than the other one mention had 23 fry that i counted, so of which died, but over 20 were birthed

it seems like my guppy has birthed about seven fry at least that i was able to save from being eaten , I have a 2o gallon tank and ive put up a tank divider, currently the fry are too small and dumb to stay on the correct side of the divider , they can get through it, how long before they are big enough to put in seperaated side of the tank?

Put a bunch of java moss in the tank. I did this and my fry count has gone up substantially. I have tried all of those breeder nets and stuff, but just plain java moss works the best.
