Wife and live feeding...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was raising feeder guppies for awhile. It was more work but also more fun than pellets. I enjoyed raising and breeding them. It sort of turned into a selective breeding project as the fancies with smaller tails were fed to the fish the larger tails became more abundant. I will probably do it again until I end up with frankenguppy.

I'd be thrilled if my GF took an interest in fish, for whatever reason . . . if she wanted to keep her own tank of guppies, I'd say "go for it"

i have very different views than a lot of yo us i don’t call watching a pinky getting eaten a man"lye thing i call it animal cruelty no mater if its a pinky or a minnow i have no problem feeding live hoppers to my tegu because she needs it or she would live a very short life I believe if an animal needs live food feed it but if it doesn’t why put a live creature thou un necessary pain im a man and i keep aggressive fish but all my fish are healthy on non live food and some have been for a while now i believe that live food can do more harm than good to an animal it can introduce parasites overasly not if you breed the live food your self but why go thou all the work of setting up another breeding tank its extra work for you doing the extra water change if one of my fish wont eat i will feed it a cricket or a hopper only because i have to and i will do what i need to to keep the fish healthy if all my fish needed live fish every feed i would feed live
sorry to preach and go on pls don’t think i have some thing against you because you feed live because i don’t their your animals and you do what you think is right i respect that

I agree with Kaosu, just because it's packaged nicely dosen't mean it met a pleasant end. I'm not a fan of commercial farming (beef, fish, mouse..whatever) but at the moment I usually use prepared foods. I'd rather feed an animal that I know was raised under good conditions and was dispatched of humanely (I do consider being swallowed humane..at least it's "natural").

I feed live food to my gar because they won't eat pellets, so live it is. Minnows are great, but I like to vary their food, feeding them just one thing. There are fish in pellets . The fish in the pellets are farmed just like roseys or guppies. At least I can control what the guppys eat, and can provide them a good home.

I disagree with not feeding live every once in a while, I do my best to replicate a natural habitat, I enjoy seeing my gar stalk a minnow or my festae catch ghost shrimp. I feed them pellets and sticks, so they can be healthy. Its a part of the hobby that I enjoy the most. I respect your humanitarian views, its good to see someone that is adult enough to voice their opinion, and still respect mine.

The bottom line for me----I keep these fish, They are not in their natural environment to hunt and feed themselves.. It's my responsability to feed them(a varied diet). It was said best earlier in this thread "Fish eat fish"--lol.. When I kept pythons it was my job to feed those monsters--I knew that before I got them. I did have to switch up the snake food though. My wife would get upset when I fed them rabbits--I had to go to live chickens.. She didn't care about them:screwy::ROFL::ROFL:!!!!

Good luck Guys/Gals:headbang2,
Chris

i feed my fish any thing they will eat lizards, feeder goldfish, bream, old bait i dont use when i come back from fishing, pellets, flakefood, but my favorit is lizards because its fun to watch.

I disapprove of feeding mice to fish, not just because I think it's cruel, but that fish don't digest mammal meat well and it's dangerous for the fish. But, other than that, the OP seems to be a very responsible fishkeeper.

As for feeding Lizards to your fish... that's just not a smart thing to do.
