Yeah... I think I'm gonna convince her otherwise. If I have a 125g tank it'll either be a monster FW tank or a reef tank... To me one big turtle isn't that cool (no offense to turtle owners)

That's why you get a pond with several big turtles:D

That's an option when I get a house... I live in an apartment currently.

I plan on having a couple thousand gallon koi pond when we move into a house so IF turtle and koi get along then maybe

Just try to get larger koi, or wait till the koi grow out a bit to add em. Koi can get up to 2feet while Adult Red Eared Sliders only 10-12" which will most likely detour them from "noming" on them but, you cant trust them and fish fully if they want they will tear into a koi and shred it like a hot knife through butter. U'll probably just have to observer them if you do it and maybe give away some of the ones who have/develop a special appetite for koi lol

If there's enough space, koi and turtles are usually fine. You might get occasional nipping, but it's not too bad. At work we've got a 1000 gallonish pond with 30-40 koi ranging from 6-24" and a bunch of turtles with no problems.

This^ At NASA where my mom works, there is a very large pond with at least a hundred koi and probably around 20-30 turtles, and also some ducks.

Depends which turtles you have, too. Painted turtles, maps, cooters, redbellies, etc. are less likely to nip fish than sliders are.

How long are these guys good for in a 10g? like months or years?

A few months if your lucky. They grow quick when they are little if cared for properly. I wouldn't even put them in a 10 to start to be honest.

I found that out the hard way bought 2 babys not knowing what I was doing came home did a lil bit of research, bought em a 10 and thought they were good, started getting big got a 30, started getting bigger, got a kiddie pool and turned it into a pond and now their set for life lol. I first got the babys about 7-8 months ago one didn't make it the other is 3 1/2 inches they grow fast when little.
If you want to get a tank to hold one or 2 for a good while, your best bet would be probably a 55 which could probably last 1 1/2-2 years(guessing here)

If you want the look and not so much maintenance, tortoises would be a better route. Redfooted tortoises are a good choice as they are pretty widely available and don't get huge. You wouldn't need to worry about feeders as they are vegetarian and because they are land dwelling the risk of salmonella for your child would be a lot less.
