Is it just me or does it seem like NO ONE has anything other than wild caught or 1st generation offspring when it comes to selling higher dollar fish?

This seems an impossibility, but who am I to say.

I'm all for the "rare", but why can't I just sell everything I have as wild caught or F1?

And really, how many of us actually buy F1 fish that are more likely F1255?

Is there any real way of checking? I would guess not, but figured I'd pose the question.

certain fish though it is easy to assume they are wild caught even if they are not listed as so. They just dont breed in captivity

I asked this same question a few months ago. There is no real way to tell unless you saw them catch the fish. The truth is most people sell these "F1" fry from their so-called F1 parents. They lie about it cuz who wants an F2 when you could call it an F1 and sell it for more. They may not even know that their F1 breeders are not even F1s at all. Infact, some transporters buy their fish from pet stores over the border and call them F0s.
The good news is some fish, as previously stated, are too rare and must have been wild caught. Also, there are some characteristics that only wild, or a few generations from wild, have so you can make an ejukated guess. ( laterally compressed, pronounced eyes and mouth, ect...) Even if it is not F0, but really F8, It should still look similar to F0.

I have an F0 flowerhorn for sale $1,000 pm me.

F0 flowerhorn? I think you can find those in south Florida :) or if not you probably soon will. Blood parrots not so much though, not sure BP's would be able to establish themselves.

I do a fair bit of concert trading (audio & video) and unfortunately lying about lineage is commonplace in certain trading communities; selling/trading 3rd-generation tapes as masters or 1st-gens. It's the same everywhere; guys will try to inflate the value of what they've got. I can picture some guy breeding a really nice Midas and thinking, hmm, I could pass him off as F1. I guess the best way to avoid problems is just do your research and buy from dealers with solid reps. Generally if a guy is passing off Fwhatever stock as F0 or F1 eventually somebody will catch on, and word will spread.

Fry from two F1 would be F2... I have a few F1s... my julie fry have F1 parents... but I am sure lots of people sell fish that are not... Of course a F0 and F1 mate and you get a F2...

See now THAT statement I didn't know and really never considered. That is a GREAT point. I would guarantee that most people consider the fry from an F0 & any other fish an F1 offspring.

Thanks for that.

knowing if a fish your buying if F0 or LFS fish that are many captive generations old, is about- knowing and trusting the seller- ie a guy like jeff rapps. your not going to be able to automatically id a fish as wild caught just by looking at it.

And if Mr. Rapps was told it was F1 and it was actually F10? That's my point. There is no certification or proof. Man, even if you personally caught a couple of fish yourself, from a lake in the congo, how are you going to prove it? Plane ticket, boarding docs, cargo manifest, yes, but that's like 1 out of a 1000 situations.
It's all word of mouth and trust, but how do you know about the person before the person you trust?
Someone start a fishfax site!!
