Looking to get into bichirs. I want to put together a group of six or so bichirs of the same species in hope to form a breeding group. I am looking at ornates, endlicheri, or delihezi. Is there any benefits of wild caught or tank raised other than appearance. Just trying to make the best decision before I tie up an aquarium for 5 years plus. They would be starting in a 125G aquarium. What do you all think.

Also where would you get them online. I've already emailed with Rehoboth and he doesn't have anything small right now.

Thanks
Dan Blue

Tank raised as in captive bred? I'm not sure there is very much 'tank raised'. Just wild caught or captive bred

I guess a lot comes down to wether you are looking to just have fun and try your hand at breeding a challenging fish or are you wanting to breed for profit? If it were for profit I would start with the best stock possible which to me is wild caught. They will have the best head shape and the more distinct elongated bodies. This would give you nice looking offspring.

If its for fun then no big issue get what you want and have fun. If your contacting Rehoboth then you are looking at high quality parents.

If your looking to breed i would look at wild caught, Like DMD123 DMD123 mentioned they have better characteristics better than captive breed. Plus captive breed already have some deformation in their genes due to massive production. I never breed any poly and i dont plan to but if i would, i will start with wild caught, just my opinion.

Not that i have tried it but it seems have allot of one species is the way to go. Hopefully CizziB CizziB and tlindsey tlindsey chime in. If your dead set on breeding i guess wc would be the way to go. But maybe a challenge i think it was cizzib that said it takes a good 3 or 4 yrs gor them to become sexually mature. Looong project

That's what I have heard too. I don't think you would easily make much from it

One or 2 males with a larger group of females is probably the way to go
