Wild Caught Verse Tank Raised

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 2 different groups of Senegals spawn in the aquarium. The recent group I have spawned after about a year. I really didn't think the Polys would breed in my aquarium tbh but got surprised when I spotted a tiny fry lol.☺ J jaws7777 , DMD123 DMD123 , Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 , Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 , Hendre Hendre I agree with all that was stated by all. Personally for myself it was a challenge, and not for profit . I also would go for only a group of wc species besides Sen or Ornate if wanting the best looking and healthiest fry.

I'm hoping more to breed knives than polypterus lol. I think it varies by species.

Simulated rainfall seems to be a big factor

For many sellers. Tank Raised = captive bred. This may just be the old CB vs WC question
While most keepers say "captive bred" I think I see most vendors saying "tank raised." Not sure why that is, maybe because of the implications of the word "captive."

I've never done it but I would agree with what everyone has said. It always makes sense to breed the best quality stock, and in this case that would be wild caught. Reheboth might not have smaller ones but that's probably a good thing, it will give you a head start, as they'll be closer to maturity. And as said above, you'll do best with a couple males with several females. If you do this then definitely do a thread documenting the project.

Not a bad idea :)

I'm still yet to breed anything, I'm currently eyeing my rosy barbs. I think bichirs would be an awesome project

From a more general breeding perspective I find that I have more success with CB/TR over WC fish. Even if it is an F1 I seem to have better success. Once I get into the first generation of my own offspring it usually gets even easier, and yields increase. My guess is that we tend to select for fish that are less tightly tied to natural cues and are more adaptable to our own specific conditions.

This does not change that the WC stock is going to be the exact fish that you find in its native habitat. If you want to replicate that perfectly then you should start with WC fish and cull relentlessly against every anomaly. Whether that is the "best" stock is all in the eye of the beholder. It depends on what you want out of this fun, profit, prestige, etc.

As for where to buy them online. I believe http://www.gunpowderaquatics.net/ can get most of what you asked for CB from Asia. I don't know if he gets WC stuff or not. I don't know where to go for WC fish. I am sure other members have better answers for that.

They are 30 min from my home where I live. They get an interesting supply of wc, cb and occasional oddball. Good business to order from.

Segrest is also around the corner from me and their truck driver comes to my office. Nice people.

My oldest male i have had for 10years and my group of 10 ornates has been together for about 7-8 years. I have 3 males (but only the 2 biggest breed) and 7 females. The hard thing is not to get them to breed but to get the eggs to hatch and the frys to survive and eat.

I don't know if mine are wc or breed in captivity, but i guess in captivity. In asia the breed Polypterus but use hormons in the water and inject in the fishes. Mine breed all naturally :)

I agree the biggest hurdle is finding and collecting the eggs which are tiny for Senegal and rearing the fry.
