What is the definition of wild caught? Some time ago (no idea when, but I presume aver 15 years ago) convicts were released into a nearby stream here. They coped on their own, no one feed them, and they multiplied. Are these fish concidered wild?

Technically they are wild, but wouldnt be classified as that, just because they arent native to that area. They would be called ferral instead.
I think feral is the correct term. You can call the fish whatever you want but I would not call your fish an F2. The reason people want WC or F1 fish is they want fish with the most natural genes. Your convicts were probably released into the wild after many generations of living in aquaria where they were probably not naturally selected but instead had the fry looked after, had fish bred together that looked good, were inbred and other non natural selection methods deciding which fish live and which fish die. Then they were released into a non native waterway which further altered that natural selection process as there were different predators, different foods, different temperatures, etc than there native habitat so different fish may have lived than in the natural habitat. This is not trying to insult your fish in any way.
feral . . . no different than stray cats/dogs breeding; they don't become "wild" again (though they might behave like they have)

Wild caught fish come from their actual wild habitat where as what you have are pond or lake bred fish as its been said they are feral i suppose.
Even if they look nice, it would be dishonest to call them "wild caught", F1, F2, etc. based on generations of these feral fish if you were to sell them as that. When people see "F1", they expect them to be the first generation from true wild caught parentsPadiwan cichlidiot;3392314; said:
