Here's some fish from the Three Gorges in China. I went there sometime in January 08...gulpers, chinese sturgeons etc

Of course, even an idiot of fine proportions wouldn't dream of diving down that deep in the freezing, murky water to find these monsters.

Dan, the fish in your picture might be Poecillia Wingei? Their body markings are very interesting...as in, "Can I have a bunch for thirty bucks?" interesting :P

Poecillia wingei? Thanks for the I.D.! The place was full of them, too bad I didn't have a dip-net (and a direct flight home, and a permit...)

Micstarz, that's awesome that you made it to Three Gorges - I'm sure that was a very cool experience. Like you said, diving there would be near impossible.

These are some pictures from a crocodile breeding Co-op near San Blas, Nayarit. I'm not sure on the catfish species. The larger cichlid-like fish were "Tilapia" (again, not sure of the species). The darker, somewhat smaller, and much more camera-shy cichlid looked a lot like a Managuense.

Nice! Were the cichlids food?

I'm not sure, but they probably do net some for food. They weren't captive, they were in a river adjacent to the farm. They had a gumball machine full of fish food, which is why there were so many of them.

I don't know how interested you are in coming to the US, but our most diverse area for freshwater fishes is in the southeastern states, specifically Tennessee and Alabama; these states have well over 300 species of fish. They also have many beautiful clear streams for snorkeling. If you are interested I can give you some specific locations.

Ah...I see....just like what they do with water bodies full of trout...except this time it's cichlids!

That sounds good. Are the fish coldwater or tropical though? US fish sound somehow less enticing than tropical fish though (at least as pets).

Are there hellbenders and lots of different Caudates too?
