Is it your opinion that the hobbyist still prefers orange? I would think that the trend is turning or has turned to more complex/ wild colours and still we do not see them often enough.

I have never seen a barred midas, live, jn 40 years plus....just tiny babies that peel to orange or yellow...

Yes, I would think that the average hobbyist that shops at Petco, Petsmart, etc would prefer a solid orange, or creamsicle (orange/white) midas over a midas with more typical markings and colors. Those color traits being easier to fix than some kind of tri-colored piebald, is why large scale commercial breeders are still producing those color variants. Obviously they sell well. My personal all time fave is the first one shown in the following link. Unfortunately it died shortly after reaching the US.

What an awesome fish, Neill. That black anout. You know ita history and why it died?

I think the owner lost it due to internal parasites.

He changes a bit every day. He always keeps the black around the lips, top of his body, and tail. Anything else varies.

Yeah mine are almost all orange already :( but they have this weird blotchy orange thing going on. Very cool to see what these will all look like in a year

I got one of the 7-7.5 inch wild Midas from the same import. My fish has almost no black markings left either. With their changing appearance in mind, I wasn't too concerned with what color variation I got as long as I was getting a healthy, wild Midas. He is already begging like any captive bred cichlid, and seems to recognize me and the food I carry. He hasn't warmed up to the wife and kid yet. Other times he just stops by to look at me as if I am some sort of alien. He rips through the large omega one cichlid pellets, but for some reason spits out the Hikari Cichlid Gold. Can't wait to see what he looks like as an adult.

You guys all got great looking fish BTW. :D

Nice pickup.
