Wild Oscar pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
here are more pics. The details of his pastern really don't come out in pics. Maybe its because I am using an iphone. 1 is the wild oscar. 2 is the full tank its a 20 long grow out tank. I have a 75 waiting for them. I cant wait until they get big enough! 3 is my regular tiger Oscar he is a cool looking guy to I think. I have some baby fire mouths in with them so those are the other fish you are seeing.

The heater got knocked of the slide glass when I was moving stuff and I didn't want to put my hands in the tank and stress out a new fish. I will be fixing that tonight.

What type of wild O is it? Do you know the collection point?

I am in the process of hunting that down. The LFS said they ordered from a guy in NJ who specializes in importing sa/ca cichlids. There cant be that many people specializing in that in NJ. So I think I may know who that is so I have an e-mail in to him. If it isnt who I think it is I am going to ask if My LFS can put a call into where they ordered it. I have a pretty good relationship with them so I am hoping they will help me you.

If either of those avenues don't work do you know if there is a way of telling by there markings either as juvies or adults?

Talk about Irony. So my 3 year old wants to name it Oscar. Not because it is an Oscar but because the fish on shark tales is named Oscar LOL. I cant really have an Oscar named Oscar can I?

If it is wild a cought Astronotus ocellatus you might be able to make an educated guess as to the ID from the markings as an adult. This is depending on how distinctive the markings are and how representative of its type it is. As an example, Marajo can be pretty distinctive but Bahia sometimes not so much as well as Rio Negro et al, so it depends. Getting the location from the importer is really the only sure way of knowing otherwise your really only guessing. You're thinking they came from TUIC, Jeff Rapps. Correct?

I bought a little baby O that looked just like yours. This is what he looked like 3 years later. He was dead in the photo; I'd never hold a live fish like that.

I think Jeff has photos of adult wild Os that he's selling so you might be able to get a better idea of what yours will look like when he gets bigger.

just passed up on a opportunity on picking up a F0 Oscar myself, cute little guy though, wont be able to tell until he grows up a little...

Usually these loners in LFS that are sold as F0 Oscars are contaminants that end up in the shipment with other wild fish, i personally have not seen any LFS selling a tank full of F0 Oscars.

Good luck with him/her, at the rate Oscars grow you will have one handsome fish in no time at all

Update pics of my Wild Oscar. He is getting a reddish tint to his fins his black is more a blue steel color right now and his eye spot is coming in. He is getting rusty color spots on his stripes. (I didn't expect this cause I dont see much red or orange on the wild o pics I see)

He has tippled in size in about 2 months. I had to use the flash on one pic to show the red I have named him Water Dog. Its a funny name but the day I got him he killed a fire mouth by pinning it against the bottom of the tank and shaking it like a dog with a toy. Then swam away without eating it. My jaw hit the ground. He is now with fish bigger than him. Now every morning he greats me at the front of the tank and I say hows it going Water Dog.
