Hi i just got offered some 12" wild Peru rotkeils for £45, are they as hardy as aquarium bred fish or are they weak?

I just don't want to spend the money if they are going to be as much of a liability as say...Discus or Marine..

I dont know about weakness but mine seem to be fine...I have 4...2 are shy and hide when I walk up to the tank eventually coming back out...and the other 2 are at the top waiting for food. When I first got them they all were skittish and would dart if I walked up too fast.

Damn thats a big severum.......

Cool cool, i think i may get one :)

Dunno how my sadistic female Green will take to it, she may have to be rehomed :P

I've always felt that most of my wild cichlids were hardier and stronger than my tank-bred fish. Then again, I've never noticed a difference between tank-bred and wild discus, either. I treat them all the same and they seem to be fine. About half of my severums here are wild and they're great. They're not shy at all and eat well. Some are even spawning.

I'd gladly pay the asking price....I've never seen a 12" severum of any species....make sure you post some pictures!!! :)

Will do :) I have seen some 12 inchers at Maidenhead aquatics in Taunton before taht had them in a 15ft tank, there was atleast 8-10 of the min there ranging from 10-12" the biggest where the Golds and Reds.

They had full grown Oscars and Jags, Butti, Geos, RTC, TSN, Gibbis, 3ft Aro, Gars, in there also.

The Biggest Oscars where actually smaller in mass than the Sevs, just slightly longer.

I would worry that size that they aren't wild rotties though. Rotties are like turquoise sevs, they are one of the smaller species/races. Though, several species do grow larger in tanks than they do in nature (oscars for instance).

I have seen 2 green sevs at their full adult size of 12" SL, but only 2 in all the years of working at a LFS and keeping fish. But then that guy grew everything to it's full adult size.

I agree completely. I can't imagine that they are anywere near 12". I have never seen a Rotkeil over 9". I think severums are a little hard to judge length with out measuring. A 10" severum is so tall bodied that it will look huge. My largest ever was just a 11" and just glancing at it you would think it was 14".

Not seen them yet guys, so will soon let you know, anything over 7" is good for me tho :)
