Wild Rotkeils....are they weak?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wilds would be the way to go if you want Rotties over there, I've read/been told several times that in Europe there is a lot of cross breeding Rotties to greens.

I agree completely. I can't imagine that they are anywere near 12". I have never seen a Rotkeil over 9". I think severums are a little hard to judge length with out measuring. A 10" severum is so tall bodied that it will look huge. My largest ever was just a 11" and just glancing at it you would think it was 14".

Exactly. I was thinking "oh a sev as long as my psittacus....man it's huge!"

happens here too ;)

I know, but not as frequently. We (for the most part) treat rotties as a seperate, undescribed species while in Europe they are considered an efasciatus ... so there is more crossing there than here. Didn't mean to come across as it not happening over here of course.

Yeh they have been put in the Efaciatus complex along with the Appen (god knows how to spell it)

They are known as Heros Efaciatus Sp Rotkeil.

Afternoon lads.

As above really.

Rotkeils will struggle to get to above 10", but as always, we've got a habit of rounding up fish size ;-)

At £45, its not a bad price (more then i'd pay, but still, not terrible for a fish that size) BUT i'd be grilling Maidenhead about catch location etc. Their not exactly known for importing wilds when commercially bred fish are available.

Your looking for southern/eastern peru specifically.

Watch out for dense, fine worming on the face. Strong clear half bars across the body. A stong, complete final bar with 2 clear dots in the dorsal and anal fin.

If their all present, your looking at a pure rotkeil. If anything is missing (or the worming looks chunky and is clearly seperated) your most likely looking at a hybrid (there are PLENTY floating about being flogged as pure)

All the best
Craig
