so there is this pair of wild mated severums with just brilliant colors theyre about 5 inches in the tank at the petshop(they are by themselves) they seem rather aggressive.
now i would love to have these but do you think they are going to be too aggressive for my 55 gallon?

im planning on having a 3-4 inch "royal" plecostomus
a few schooling tetras
alot of wood and plants. maybe a few rocks

the tank is cycling right now so im not gonna make any hasty decisions lol.

I think you should be fine as long as just them in the tank as a main fish. How much are they asking for? You should have taken some pics and posted it here.
As long as you like their coloration and price is right, I would go for it. I have my severum with some lemon tetras.

The Only reason they are agressive is because they are wanting to spawn. Happens to mine. Nicest fish ever until they spawn.

okay yeah its says 36.99 and i think thats for the pair. ill take pictures next time im there i had an f3 severum spawning pair a while back. and they were completely docile
do you think tetras would eat the eggs/fry of the wild pair? or do they protect it pretty well?

Once fry go free-swimming, they will get picked off by tankmates. Parents will probably do their best to guard them, but wandering fry are easy targets.

A 55 is probably okay, but if the fish continue to grow, you'll want to maybe put them into something with a little more room.

You also have to watch severums pretty carefully -- spawning pairs can turn on one another if they have a disagreement. I had a pair that did great and raised three spawns for me, then the male decided that he hated the female and attempted to kill her. After she recovered, I tried reintroducing her, and he immediately went to attacking her again. They're no longer a pair, obviously.

I always pull my fry to a separate tank. I start in a 20 gallon bare-bottom and move them up to a 55 when they hit 1/2" or so. The only other way to keep them alive would be to avoid tankmates for the pair, and then hope the pair parent-raises and doesn't eat fry.
