Sorry if I'm draggin the waters, but i've been doing some research on trimacs, and I discovered what seem people refer to as "pyro" trimacs. Looks like gentleman in my neck of the woods named skip has been line breeding trimacs. I found an old thread on MFK that addresses this issue some what:

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?356941-Are-these-fish-pure-trimac/page4

I'd like to know if anybody has anymore information on this. I don't know enough to make an educated guess about what's going on here, but i will say that this statement is highly suspicious:

Now for all of you who don't know what's a Pyro Trimac it's a line breed Trimac. Like for example the "Barred Midas cichlid" has many diff- blood lines such as the "Red Isletas/ Chancho/ Amarillo" and many more. But do we question if they're true barred Midas cichlids? No we don't because at the end of the day you have a Midas cichlid. So why some of you question the Pyro Trimac? Because the same go for them at the end of the day you have a true Trimac cichlid.

Aren't chancho and amarillo different species? if you breed different species together doesn't that make a hybrid?

sounds like hybridization more than line breeding to me....

I'm interested to know your thoughts.

Here's some more media that shows these pyro trimacs:

<------See Bill?

sounds like hybridization more than line breeding to me....

thats all it is...there are other threads on this here as well.

"MOB" "PYRO" "NEW SCHOOL" & "Real Hard Cichlids KENNEL" pretty much explains it all.

all gimmicky BS by someone that is applying dog fighting vocabulary/terms to fish breeding.

Agreed - A gimmick

I was under the impression that the so called pyro trimac was select breeding for the red in the throat area. Also someone just trying to make a name for themselves.

If it was line breeding, you'd be only breeding trimacs with trimacs. Just selectively breeding the ones with lots of red on the throat.

As soon as you start breeding it with other species that are red to get a more red fish.....You are hybridizing.

Simple as that.
