Wild strain trimacs vs "pyro" trimacs?

WHAT!?!
I watched the first two videos and listened to his commentary and he never says at any point that he bred with flowerhorn. Actually, what I saw and heard I found VERY impressive. His perspective on the amphilophus genus is a bit different than most of ours but this guy has a 15 year old line or trimacs that look outstanding!!! He explains very candidly how he selectively bred his line while introducing new blood over the generations. He seems to have kept pretty good track of which fish bred with which by naming THEM ALL!!!
So again, WHAT!?!
You guys are bashing this guy? For what? His passion for the hobby? Please.

x2, i agree seems like he is just line breeding so whats wrong with that, i dont understand when did he add flowerhorns in the mix?

I think line breeding and projects like this in general are a different sort of hobby altogether than what some people in this section are in to... The notion that you cannot improve upon nature and that with depleting habitats around the world keeping and breeding wild type fish is the goal.

Others love line breeding or even hybrids. To each their own, there's enough room in this hobby for everyone and then some.

Not claiming its a hybrid. Naming your line bred fish is simply just "a gimmick." Not questioning "his passion for the hobby" or the quality of his trimacs, or that he is doing anything "wrong." Deep breath.

And this:

"Now for all of you who don't know what's a Pyro Trimac it's a line breed Trimac. Like for example the "Barred Midas cichlid" has many diff- blood lines such as the "Red Isletas/ Chancho/ Amarillo" and many more. But do we question if they're true barred Midas cichlids? No we don't because at the end of the day you have a Midas cichlid. So why some of you question the Pyro Trimac? Because the same go for them at the end of the day you have a true Trimac cichlid."

is not a "different" perspective, it's just plain BS. Those aren't all "Midas" cichlids, common names don't mean anything in reality and he would be breeding different species in the genus together and making hybrids if he did what is described in that quote.

Agreed, that was crap, but I'll never question "the first person to ever line breed a cichlid...."

With how hard it is to find a pure wild type trimac these days, I don't know why you would go out of your way for a line bred one. He picked a really bad fish to do line breeding on, haha. Might as well get a flowerhorn if you're going for a slightly different look to a trimac IMO...

I gotta believe that the first people to line breed cichlids were the ancient Egyptians like 5,000 years ago...

If I were to keep trimacs, I'd find some with verifiable provenance to the wild...

Matt

If it was line breeding, you'd be only breeding trimacs with trimacs. Just selectively breeding the ones with lots of red on the throat.

As soon as you start breeding it with other species that are red to get a more red fish.....You are hybridizing.

Simple as that.

Exactly

Listen, I'm all too familiar with this guys videos on YouTube and can totally appreciate the fact that his values in regards to fishkeeping (and probably a whole lot else) may differ from most. I can't knock him though because, hype and gimmicks aside, his trimacs are nice! To assume that he's lying about the lineage of his fish or to not take him seriously because his vernacular doesn't follow your standards is a tad bit ignorant IMO.
As Matt touched on, he's doing what mankind has been doing for millennia (and what we're ALL engaged in with our wet pets) ; capturing, breeding, domesticating, modifying, and cultivating the natural world to suit our aesthetic and functional needs. Don't be fooled into believing that you're doing a noble and selfless act for the good of the natural world by breeding cichlids in glass cages. It's fun, interesting, educational, lucrative, therapeutic, fulfilling...... narcissistic, self absorbing, fruitless.... , depending on who you're talking to (or about) but not much more than that. Come to think of it, were we soooo concerned about preserving natural habitats we'd be more focused on establishing and maintaining domestic lines with a verifiable lineage instead of fawning over f1 and wild fish. As, exportation of these fish becomes more and more prohibitive will the 'pyro trimac' and other gimmicky strains and 'designer' morphs become the norm? I think YES!
