"Wild" Texas Cichlids in New Orleans, LA.

A few weeks ago on a local board someone said they were catching Texas cichlids by the dozens at a pond near the lake. I went out there last friday with a regular net and bucket in hand. Well that was a joke, the pond was larger than i thought. And the cichlids are bigger and faster than i thought. Tomorrow I'm going to go out there with a cast net and see what i can get. It appeared as though they were spawning, as they had one pair with seemed to be 200-300 fry swimming around them and there were also areas near the bank where it looked like nests had been made. Can't be for sure if they are cichlids till i pull them out the water. A few that i did see had the speckle pattern and body shape, but when i was out there it was getting dark and not many lights around.

Will post pics tomorrow.
 
That's how I got mine. good luck. They're hard to net, bring some bread with you, they love that stuff. And if you miss on the first few tries, they're not coming back lol
 
That is exactly what they are out there...I think city park is where you can find them too (if thats not where your at already). Thats why they are illegal in nola...they can and do live there. Good luck in your fishing...post some pics!

Well the net i have has like an 8 foot spread, so, hoping i can get something.
