"Wild" Texas Cichlids in New Orleans, LA.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish I could catch wild here too.
As hardy as they are, the winters are probably too cold even though our winters are really mild for Canadian winters.
I was still wearing short in DEC.-JAN. :D

Well today was a mild success. Caught 4 fish in total 3 cichlids, and one sunfish. Was having a hard time throwing the cast net at first. Its been a while since i have thrown one. But i caught a small cichlid, not sure of the sex, about 3-4". Then i caught the sunfish, it was about 5-6". After a few more mis throws, i saw a pair staying close to each other go under some seaweed, so i thought i would give a try and make a throw. It was almost a perfect throw. I pulled it in. And bam, got both of them. Large male and i believe a big female. Male is probably 7-8" female is probably 5-6". I put the sunfish back. Took them home and put a divider in the tank and place them on their side. I would have put them in a separate tank, but i don't have space for another right now.

I will say it myself.

I will get pics tomorrow because they were pretty stressed out and the lights are off.

Here is what i could get. The first pic is the first one that i caught, smaller, not sure of the sex. The second pic is the head of what i think is the female of the pair. The big male is still hiding behind some rocks, and dont wanna disturb him just to take some pics.

Awesome!! Well, kinda sad to see an introduced species surviving in a foreign environment, but still kinda cool.

What sort of temperature range do they handle? How cold does it get over night there? Is carpintis similarly hardy?

Well the coldest the air temp was this past winter was about 30*, Summer nights dont get colder than about 78*. Not sure about the last one.
