:-Wild Tiger Oscar's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the info everyone. I havent got my tank yet as I might be moving house so I wouldnt want to stress the fish moving them so I am going to see what happens first. I am just planning on what tank mates to get for it. If I dont move it wont be too long hopefully untill I get it as only 1 room needs to to be decorated and the floor can also be reinforced while its been redecorated. If I move house it will probably take quite awhyle as the house is going to be built, but that would mean the tank could be plumbed or something and the room can be designed around it so I have enough space for maintence.

I just sold my wild oscars - not only do they look completely different to tank bred, but they also have a completely different personality - they are far more skittish, less understanding and probably the worse fish to have to net !!

Oh yeah - they get big !!! my wilds were O crassipinnis, from columbia I think, they didn't really have anything by way of colour on the bodies, just pale stripes when in the mood, the base body colour was charcoal to black ... the fins were outstanding.

They grow quite quickly, with my two largest reaching 12" in about a year - the largest that I sold was about 16" total length and 8" deep !!! mine wewre kept in a 10x3x3 ... they do need plenty of space due to their personality

Ditch the oscars.. They are over-rated and too common. If you are going to build such a gorgeous monster tank, why use the space on such a common fish that every joe schmoe in a trailor keeps. You can find a ton of other colorful, personality driven, large Cichlids that will go in that tank. Also, they put off too much waste for their worth, IMO. Leave oscars to the people who like to see 'big fish eat little fish' oo0o00o.. :)

I would concentrate on the Aro/Ray selection ;)

PS. Maybe I sound biased, but when you work at a petstore, and see the amount of un-knowledge, neglectful, white-trash, bug-zappin, he-yuckin rednecks that own Oscars, you get disgusted. They come in and buy them 200 feeder fish, for their 55g tank which they think is 'HUGE', since they upgraded the oscar from a 10g, etc etc etc.. It goes on and on. I love it when I don't talk to them, but they insist on telling me all about their gloriful oscar, blah blah blah.. Same ole' Story. You don't want to keep the same common fish, do you?

whatever miles. I happen to live in a trailer and have plenty of nice fish. a 300 gallon and a 90 gallon at the moment. ive kept oscars, and ive seen TONS more lame ass yuppies like yourself come in and buy the oscars and the feeders. Leave the remarks about white people and trailers behind and you'll do just fine here. everyone has an opinion *******!!!why are your fish sooooo much better than the little kids oscars he loves or the oscar the dude down the road has had for 10 years. not all fish are rare and uncommon monsters you have to pay out the hole for. As long as we are not talking guppies or mollies in the monster fish keepers forum then dont bash on the oscar lovers.

:angryfire vs. :swear:

relax fella's geez! the name calling & stereotypical labeling needs to come to a halt...

I was bashing on those who only keep Oscars for the simple fact that they eat smaller fish.

I was also bashing on those who neglect Oscars, and don't give them proper homes.

You're not either of these.. The idea behind the trailor comment, is they lack space, so they neglect Oscars by putting them in unsutiable homes. If you have a 300g in your trailer, obviously you don't fall under that category.

It's my opinion, your right. :headbang2

If you like Oscars, and keep them properly, then I wouldn't classify you as one of those people.

I would imagine most true 'Oscar enthusiests' don't like the reputation that has been given to Oscars, nor the fact that so many of them are 'doomed to death' from the day they are bought. They are great fish, don't get me wrong.. but when people with mullets come in and tell me they "feed their Oscars Pizza, because they eat anything!", it upsets me... or the countless times I hear comments like "Dem Oscars der are related to dem Bass, I betcha.. They eats just bout anythings just like a big mouff bass." or... "oscurs and piranas are close to related, because they both eat dem small fish... I keep Oscers so I can watch them eat thems small fish. Me oscar is in me ten gallons, good thing he grows to the size of that home he is in." :headshake

If a yuppie came in and did the same things, for the same reasons, I would look at them the same way. :shakehead

Sorry I struck a nerve, dude. So .. Do you keep Oscars in YOUR 300g? Or perhaps since you invested in such a large expensive tank, you would want to keep something a little less uncommon than oscars? If you 'pay out the hole' for a 300g tank, than why would you buy the cheapest, and most overdone cichlid of all-time? See my point? That's what this thread was about.. Mmmhmm.. Okay.

Yeah I am not sure if I want large cichlids as I have heard they can randomly attack other fish and bite their eye's etc. I want to get an Asian aro eventually when I am sure my tank is stable so I don't end up wasting money on a dead Asian aro. I would like rays but people tell me I wouldn’t need at least a 10% water change a day which could not be possible if I went away so I am not sure what to do (I would prefer to do 25% every 3-4 days). I quite like birchers and Siamese tiger fish so I might go with that. I was planning on spending about £1300 ($2250) on the tank and filters so do you think that would be enough money to buy good enough filtration for rays? I was thinking about putting one eheim pro 3 at each end of the tank. What other tank mates would be 'different' and could go with aro's and rays?

Thanks,

Kieran

I would say your water changes should depend on how often your fish are fed, and what your nitrate levels are at. 30-40% every 3-4 days would be no problem, IMO. I tend to do 50% a week, at home.

Bichers and Siamese Tiger Fish are also good tankmate ideas. You will get lots of ideas by looking through the photo gallery :)
