My opinion is that you already have more then enough filtration with the FX-5 alone.
if you want to reduce your nitrates, you could construct an overly complicated denitrifying system, add plants, or simply increase water changes.

How long has the tank been up and running? every time you clean the media, are you leaving some of it alone? you could be disturbing the bacteria attempting to colonize if its a new setup or new filters
I would say make a sump that has an area for plants and have the fx5 as a return pump for extra filtration.
Are you sure your test kit is giving you accurate readings?
