I have a male GT which is about 7-8 inches long. Just wanted to know how big he will be able to get in a 50 gallon tank. He is a very healthy fish.

They can hit 12" providing its a saum and not a true GT. A 50G if it is a 36x18x19" like i have on my list, is far too small for a fish that can hit 12".
Larger cichlids need a larger footprint, ie L x W. the minimum for a male GT should be a standard 55G but even that is pushing it because of the width.
From the way i am picking up your question it would seem you believe in the "fish only grows to the size of the tank" myth. Correct me if im wrong. If you do then you need to know that its false.

Providing you do proper maintenance and care then there is nothing stopping him hitting his potential other than genetics.

As a single wet pet a 50g is suffecient for sure. Atleast that's my opinion.

It will continue to grow to it's maximum genetic size in whatever tank it is, aslong as the water is crystal and there isn't any diseases.

yeah its the pollutants in the water that keep a fish from growing not the tanks physical size so as long as you keep up with waterchanges then it can still grow to however big its genetics say to, its just that in a smaller tank you would have to do waterchanges more often because it will get dirtier faster

I agree that tank size may not affect the final size as much as water quality does....but imagine when it's fully grown, it will be in a tank with a footprint of 3x1.5 times its length....I had a 8" male GT in a 4x2x2 120g and it still didn't seem to have enough room to move around...

i know what you mean, i have an 8.5" female midas that makes my tank look small too, granted not a 4x2x2 but still 4ft long. im glad they are only in there until dec.

to be honest I would say 55 minimum with heavey filtration and it would work but the fish will still be cramped a bit when its full grown

Yeah , its not a true GT, its a gold saum.

bigger tank will deff. be better, but seeing how you already have the fish and the tank, just make sure you have enough filtration and keep up with the water changes, maybe even do bi-weekly water changes and you should be fine and he should grow nicely, just don't add anything else to that tank and be on the look-out for a bigger tank, it will be easier on you and much better for the gt.
