Will a male GT get big in 50Gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no thats not to much at all alot of people on here (including myself once my 120 is set back up) do 50% waterchanges weekly as long as the water your putting back in is same temp so it doesnt stress fish then its good that you do big waterchanges, i would actually do like 20g wc if i were you just to make sure the water stays really good (right now since i have delicate fry in a 20L tank that i feed multiple times a day, im actually doing like 8-10g changes every other day)

Just get an api freshwater test kit and change your water when the nitrates hit 20 ppm and you will have a healthy fish that grows to it's potential. I would only be concerned if the 50 gallon was short. Most I have seen have the same dimensions as a standard 55 but are shorter. If that is the case, that is a fine tank for a gt. They will rarely get above 10 inches even in larger tanks. I had one that grew to 11 inches, but it took 8-9 years or more to get that large.

I usually change 15 gallons every week but now iv been told thats too much. Is this true?

not true, i change 50% weekly on all my tanks and sometimes 75%. as mentioned above, as long as the temp is the same and you are adding the correct amt. of water conditioner, in fact i would change at a min. 25 gals weekly in that tank, especially with the gt in there, maybe 15gals bi-weekly.

yeah no problem it sounds like your on the right track, just like others have said keep your eyes out for a little bigger tank, alot of people keep GTs in standard 55g but bigger is always better :)

I try to switch up the food as much as possible but he hates pellets and stuff like that. Only thing he likes now is peices of beefheart and i tried defrosting some shrimp we had in our freezer for OUR dinner, they are like 3 inches long. I shelled them and cleaned them and cut em up in smaller chunks and he looves those! Seems like he preffer a food that is soft.

i would try to get him on a good high quality pellet food as a good staple diet and feed him the shrimp and beef heart a couple times a week, to be healthier he needs the vegetable, vitamins, and minerals that high quality pellets provide.
