Will a school of clown loaches work?

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not really. clown loaches are quick. just make sure you leave them with plenty of hiding spots. and i believe a finer substrate would be good. my loaches dislike gravel.

I changed half the substrate to fine gravel, (going to do the whole tank because it looks better than pebbles.), added more bog wood with plants, put in some terracotta plant pots and some hiding places. I added 5 clown loaches all about 3 inches long.
Last night they were all over the tank and seemed to avoid the arowana with ease.
This morning i can only see 3, i sure hope they're really good at hiding or they,ve been eaten!!

I hope they didn't get eaten. I always keep loaches with fish that can't swallow them.

^ so do I! do they usually hide well? the 3 that i could see seemed fine and not scared, which makes me think the others are in there but i couldn't see them.

that makes me feel better, thank you.

Just to let you know, i changed all the substrate for fine gravel. While doing so i could only see 4 of the 5 loaches so i presumed 1 was eaten. It appeared out of no where!
They now have a lot more hiding places and hopefully will be ok.
I'm happy!!

further to this thread, one of the loaches is looking lifeless. It is showing no damage to it body but it doesn't move, even if i put a net near it or pick it up with a net.
I'm wondering if the aro has bit it and done damage but as i said there's no marks.
Its just sat still. I moved it to a safer place for what reason i don't know. Any ideas?
it's unusually cool at the moment but all the other 4 are doing what they do.
Do they over eat at times?
Is there anything i can do for it?

I have now had 4 of 5 loaches die, last night I checked my water because I know Loaches are sensitive, Ammonia 0%, nitrite <0.3%, P.H 8. My water is supper clean because I keep an Arowana, it cycles about 9 times an hour. The temperature I don’t know because I live in the tropics and never bother with heaters, although the water did feel cooler than normal due to current low pressure and rain.

While checking the water I found the problem, it isn't my Arowana, he has a look but leaves the loaches. The problem is a big parrot Cichlid, I saw it corner a loach and ram it over and over. It died soon after.
When my Arowana was young I used to worry the Cichlid would kill it through ramming it, I should have guessed what was going to happen to the loaches.
The parrot Cichlid was the first fish I ever bought; it cost me about a Dollar and grew big. I have changed my tank over the last week to try and house Loaches with my Arowana. Further more the Cichlid has always stopped me training my Aro to eat pellets because it’s greedy and eats everything. A few people may disagree with what I did and how I did it, but the Cichlid met its end last night after the fourth loach was killed. I did it as quickly as possible, I also had no qualms over doing it, and the loss of one killer to preserve more life is cool with my Karma.
I now have 1 clown loach and I’m going to buy more to try again. Thanks for all the advice given, I’ve learnt about tanks, water balance and Asian Arowanas from this site, I am now learning about Clown loaches.
I don’t know if anyone has been following this but like all of you I HATE buying fish for them to die because of something I may have influenced, or didn’t think about. Any Cichlid of any type should be on its own IMHO.

I now have 6 loaches, they are all over the tank and into everything.
While the Arowana is resting on the bottom they swim very close to it and it doesn't budge. It even looks like they're cleaning it, do loaches do that to other fish?
They also eat a lot, i feed them twice a day at present, in the morning with a block of defrosted blood worms and at night with about 8 to 10 small sinking hikari discs, is that enough or too much for 6 loaches?
